Trophies or Achievements?

Trophy Achievement

If you know me, then you know that when it comes to games, I am a self-proclaimed completionist. For me, the advent of achievements and trophies serves only as a catalyst for these tendencies, and I generally try to thoroughly beat every game I play. My sizable game backlog aside, I have a bit of a dilemma on my hands: should I be pursuing PS3 trophies or Xbox Achievements?  Since buying my 360 recently, I have been playing it almost exclusively, a behavior I initially dismissed as “new gadget” syndrome.  However, as the release of many A-list multiplatform titles approaches, I find myself debating whether I should give preferential treatment to one console over the other.

If you follow the news, you may notice that PS3 versions of multiplatform games seem to be more likely to have software problems or lack content altogether. At the same time, many may argue that a PS3 title may have better graphics than the same title on 360…this is debatable in my opinion. While there are several system exclusives on both fronts that I will be picking up (Uncharted 2 for PS3, Splinter Cell: Conviction for 360), the multiplatform titles I expect I will probably pick up on 360.

Besides software issues, I generally prefer the more socially accessible gamerscore to the Playstation trophy system. It is laughable that a site like Raptr is essentially only useful to PC or 360 gamers because Sony does not release the proper information for Raptr to collect on its gaming focused social network (I won’t even get into the lack of Wii support). Besides this, the social nature of the PS3 trophy system feels largely absent due to a weak multiplayer base, whereas Xbox Live’s gamerscore fosters a satisfyingly competitive environment.

I worry that my PS3 may be relegated to the back burner this season. Is there something I am missing that would make the PS3 version of a new release more desirable?
