I had never heard of Borderlands until the day I purchased it from Target. A great friend of mine called me up and said, “Zack, if you don’t go buy Borderlands right this minute, I will not be your friend anymore.” So I went out and bought it. Of course, the friend told me loads more about the game before he swayed me away from my money-consciousness. The conversation was indeed quite lengthy, but I will not bore you with all the gory details. I’ll merely try to sum up everything that my friend told me that made me interested in the game, and everything that I have experienced as I have played through the game.

I realized this past Tuesday that I would have a couple extra hours to kill going from the mid-week into the weekend. I stopped into my local Blockbuster store to check out if there were any new games I would be interested in renting. I saw Brutal Legend on the shelf, and I thought to myself, “Hmm….Jack Black is sometimes funny. And I enjoy classic rock music. And Tim Schafer’s last game was brilliant. Shouldn’t any combination of these be extraordinary?” Of course I assumed the positive, and paid the 9 dollars (Sidenote: NINE DOLLARS TO RENT A VIDEOGAME IS PRETTY RIDICULOUS.) to check out Brutal Legend for a few days.

Halo 3: ODST, to me, is this year’s Orange Box. Don’t get me wrong, I think that The Orange Box is Valve’s magnum opus (and quite possibly one of the greatest achievements in recent gaming history), but ODST is probably the second best game compilation I’ve ever played. The gameplay experience on this two-disc set is so diverse; everyone can find something to love.

My thoughts on Batman: Arkham Asylum can all be summed up in one 2-syllable, 8-letter word. Peerless.

Captain’s Log. Stardate: 9.15.09. 5.45.
I have just gotten home from picking up my copy of 5th Cell’s highly anticipated Nintendo DS game, Scribblenauts. I have been waiting many long months for this moment. My anticipation grows with each passing moment, the plastic wrap cannot come off of the case quickly enough. Luckily, the cellophane gives way to my iron will, and the case is mine. Scribblenauts feels so pristine in my hand, the gem I have been spelunking for years to find. And now it’s mine. The exuberance is near-overwhelming, my pulse at breakneck speeds. Before I insert the cartridge into my DS, I take several deep and calming breaths, and don my pre-order bonus, the much-discussed Rooster Hat. All is right with the world. Read the full story

Woe is me, ladies and gentlemen. I officially have taken on too many games for myself to conquer. I realize I said this in a previous post, but I have only added to the pile these past weeks. Along with the games I already was invested in (Shadow Complex, Red Faction: Guerrilla expansion, Spider-Man, etc.), I have purchased several more games that will be tickling my fancy over the coming months. I completed Shadow Complex last night, and now I can post my number-oriented review. I promise that I’ll keep this short and sweet. I’d just like to address a few things about my completion. First, I’ll talk about the finale. The final room of this game was actually a bit disappointing. Just a bit. It was a bit anticlimactic. There wasn’t an epic final boss battle, just a bunch of guys that you had to kill and a few buttons you had to push. Also, I decided a few days ago that I just wanted to get through the game, and that I’d go back eventually and get 100% completion. Read the full story

One of the awesomely cinematic moments in Shadow Complex.
So I am now officially over halfway done with the Xbox Live Arcade game “Shadow Complex.” Well, I’m actually probably closer to 75 percent done with it, but I was on a roll the other night, so I just played until I found a good stopping point. What I want to try and do in this report is talk about the things I’ve experienced thus far in the game (what I’ve loved, or didn’t) and what I want to happen for the remainder of my stay with Shadow Complex (game ending, replayability, unlocks, hidden items). With this report, I’ll go into some detail about a lot of things in Shadow Complex. And then when I’m all done with it, I’ll be much more concise and give the game a more numbers-oriented review, with categories like gameplay, story, graphics, etc. Read the full story

So just starting to post on here; got into the site by way of Jeff aka Frostfell aka Decksathron.
I’ll be posting stuff as MidwestGamer, since I’m located in Omaha, Nebraska, which isn’t really northwest of anywhere, besides Missouri.
Gonna start doing posts about my current gaming endeavors. I have a TON of games on my plate right now, and I need to get some of them out of the way before my big 3 of the fall (Guitar Hero 5, Scribblenauts, and Modern Warfare 2). So that’s hopefully what will be happening over the coming weeks; getting through games and Achieving some Achievements. Read the full story
