Dead Rising 2: Case Zero is exactly what many have tagged it as: a glorified demo. It has all the trappings of a demo (short play time, limited options, no story to speak of), with one key difference: this demo will set you back 5 bucks (400 MSP). Going into it, I really wasn’t sure if any “demo” would be worth an actual monetary investment. Did purchasing Case Zero pay off for me in the end? Hit the jump to find out!

WARNING: This review contains spoilers.
Alan Wake ended with our hero freeing his wife from the dark place but only in exchange for himself. “The Signal” picks up right where the main game left off. Wake is again fighting through Bright Falls, but not quite as you remember it from before. Just when you think you might have a grip on things, the environment changes. You’ll go from the diner straight into the darkness of the woods. The Taken are still there, but now you must fight them alone in this dark place (well… almost alone).

I remember my first look at Splinter Cell: Conviction came in an issue of EGM, full of concept art of a Sam Fisher given a “rugged”, some might say “homeless” new look. The game featured gameplay elements to allow the player to hide in plain sight, using crowds and the environment to slow and escape from enemies. It was a radical change from the past five games, all of which focused on stealth gameplay and an arsenal of gadgets. While these changes might’ve upset some, Splinter Cell Conviction, unlike its precessors, was shaping up to be a game I was legitimately psyched about.

Alan Wake is a title that for many years served only to occupy the tail end of release lists and always with an indeterminate date. For all that time I thought little of the title. Surely it would end up in development limbo and probably never see the light of day. Suddenly, it resurfaced at E3 2009, and my interest in Remedy’s mysterious title continued to grow until it was finally released on May 18, 2010. Was the long development cycle worth the wait?

Limbo is a game that a lot of people have been talking about for a long time. About a year ago, I saw the above screenshot, and was instantly intrigued. And let me tell you, the full game is one of the most beautiful games I have played in years. Limbo is also a great many other things which I will get into further detail about momentarily. But I know the real question that’s burning in your minds…..Is this game worth 15 of your hard-earned dollars?

Sometimes a game can come out of nowhere and completely take you by surprise. These games tend to be the ones that you remember years in the future, because the experience they gave you was unprecedented and unexpected. Metro 2033 was heralded as such a game. Many reviewers cited its “incredible atmosphere” and its “solid single-player campaign.” Others, if you can believe it, dared to compare this game to Bioshock and Half-Life 2, arguably the two best first-person story-driven games ever. I hear you asking if Metro 2033 should be lifted to such great heights. I know I was yearning for a new, great first-person story. Does Metro 2033 deliver?

The newest level in the Left 4 Dead saga is a 3-chapter kill-a-thon entitled The Passing. This level is situated between L4D2′s first two acts, Dead Center and Dark Carnival. If you’re at all familiar with the campaigns, you know that Dead Center ends with our four heroes gallantly omitting themselves from a zombie-infested shopping mall, with the help of a NASCAR-ish stock car. The Passing attempts to create a bridge between the mall and the Dark Carnival levels, with middling success.

I’ve been playing the Halo: Reach Beta for a few days now, and it’s definite change from the past. Or…maybe they’re returning to the past. Or maybe they’re bringing the past into the future. Now my head hurts.
Here’re some impressions–without any appearances by Michael J. Fox. Read the full story

BioWare is one of those special developers that makes waves with every release. So it should be no surprise that Mass Effect 2, the sequel to one of the most successful new IPs of 2007, saw more hype than ever. Given how much I enjoyed the first game, I tried to avoid whenever possible any videos, photos, news, or spoilers of Mass Effect 2 until I had that green plastic box in my hands. First impressions? Creepy box art straight out of a SciFi Channel original movie. Read the full story

Did you like Devil May Cry? Or Ninja Gaiden? If so, you’ll like Bayonetta. If you read the reviews of Bayonetta, you’d probably want to try it regardless of how you feel about DMC or NG. The reviews of it are that good. But Bayonetta is not, and I quote, “The best action game I’ve ever played.” I’ve already played Devil May Cry, and this is pretty much the same exact game. Bayonetta has a completely throw-away story, and adds absolutely nothing new to the genre. (If you say that it does, you, sir, are a dirty rotten scoundrel.) If you like mashing the X and Y buttons continuously for 11 hours, you’ll definitely want to pick this one up.
