Review: Alan Wake – The Signal

WARNING: This review contains spoilers.

Alan Wake ended with our hero freeing his wife from the dark place but only in exchange for himself.  “The Signal” picks up right where the main game left off.  Wake is again fighting through Bright Falls, but not quite as you remember it from before.  Just when you think you might have a grip on things, the environment changes.  You’ll go from the diner straight into the darkness of the woods.  The Taken are still there, but now you must fight them alone in this dark place (well… almost alone).

Halo: Reach Beta First Impressions

I’ve been playing the Halo: Reach Beta for a few days now, and it’s definite change from the past.  Or…maybe they’re returning to the past.  Or maybe they’re bringing the past into the future.  Now my head hurts.

Here’re some impressions–without any appearances by Michael J. Fox.   Read the full story

Facebook Officially Coming to PS3

Last week reports indicated that Sony would be adding Facebook integration to its PlayStation Network. Today, Sony Computer Entertainment America confirmed on the PlayStation.blog that Facebook would indeed be part of the firmware 3.10 upgrade, which is coming “soon.”

Users simply just link their PSN account to their Facebook account in order to have the PS3 automatically update their Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. Sony noted that developers will be able to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to a player’s Facebook News Feed. “This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates,” said Eric Lempel, Director, PlayStation Network Operations.

Firmware 3.10 will also revamp the Photo category on the XMB so that it’s easier to see more photos stored on the PS3, the PSN Friends List is being modified “based on feedback we received after update 3.00,” and users will be able to choose a color for the PSN ID on the XMB.

Of course, the PS3 isn’t the only console with Facebook integration. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is receiving an update today for Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm and “instant on” HD video from Zune.

Am I the only one who thinks both Microsoft and Sony are going about social network integration all wrong?
The ability to update my Twitter from Xbox Live, or sync my trophy unlocks with my Facebook status updates is simple not attractive to me. For one, a keyboard of some sort is essential, and no, the PS3 keypad is not a viable alternative. Even with the PS3′s somewhat speedier predictive typing, what would I be compelled to say from my PS3?

Maybe I could tweet about the fact that I am tweeting from my PS3 instead of playing Uncharted 2 multiplayer. I’m sure that will be really interesting for followers.

The one feature to come out of this that I do like is being able to connect which of my social network friends also have Xbox Live. I’m just not sure that I need much beyond that.

Reader: Is there something I am missing here? Do you really have some latent need to tweet through a super clumsy and slow interface?

Hands-on: Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect 2

I had the pleasure of visiting the Bioware booth at PAX this past weekend. One of the highlights of the expo for me was the playable Mass Effect 2 demo. I only recently picked up the original Mass Effect (the review of which you can expect later this week), but while I was impressed with the game’s engaging plot, the combat left much to be desired.
